I realize that "The Princess and the Frog" was released months ago, but I just feel it is necessary to remark on how happy I am to see Disney's return to the traditional style of hand-drawn animation. We're talking pen and Ink style with limited, or better yet, no computer assistance. Wonder what I mean? Well, prior to 1989, full length animated Disney films were produced using traditional hand-drawn animation techniques whereas features created post-1989 used the Digital Ink and Paint Process....it's like traditional animation, only sneakier. With this process, animation drawings are scanned into a computer and are then digitally inked and coloured. (wikipedia) Now, Pixar features like Up, WALL-E or Finding Nemo were created exclusively using computer-genreated imagery, or CGI.(Source)
As I assume was the case for most kids in the 90's, I was a BIG fan of Disney movies. The early 90's, I feel, marked the pinnacle of Disney's animation oeuvre (i.e. Beauty and the Beast: 1991 and Aladdin: 1992) Now, perhaps I am biased...nostalgia can have that effect on people, but movies like "Finding Nemo" or "Toy Story" (produced by Pixar, a Disney subsidiary, but distributed by Walt Disney Pictures) just don't do it for me.(Source)
Yes, it is true, I am a traditionalist.... I am the kind of person who still appreciates film cameras and vinyl records, so maybe that explains my unwillingness to jump on the Pixar band wagon. Anyway, enough babble from me... what do YOU think?
