Gallery Hopping...

As it has been such a lovely September thus far, my sister Lindser and I decided to venture out on a gallery crawl in Toronto's Art & Design district (West Queen West). It is an extremely fun and inexpensive way to take in some local culture and to just have a good time. I was so excited to discover that the Katherine Mulherin Contemporary Arts Projects will be holding a presentation of Canadian-born painter, Eliza Griffiths' work called "New Works on Obsessive Themes - Visual Fictions and Distilled Theatre".

oil on canvas
18 x 18 in.

Interestingly, my first introduction to Griffiths' work was on the very same gallery crawl nearly ten years ago. There is something so compelling about her work. Comprised mainly of portraits, her paintings have a painterly style that is both distinctly feminine and slightly reminiscent of Degas or Toulous-Lautrec. The faces of her subjects are what I find particularly interesting, they are vibrantly expressive and are rendered in a blend of vivid, unexpected colours.

New Works on Obsessive Themes - Visual Fictions and Distilled Theatre is on from October 2 - 24, 2010 at the Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects Gallery at 1086 Queen Street West, Toronto.
