The Venice Biennale

"Hylozoic Ground" Phillip Beesley Architect Inc. is representing Canada at the 2010 Venice Biennale the year. The
exhibition will take place in Venice, Italy, from September to November 2010.

Since its start in 1895, the Venice Biennale has become one of the most prestigious Contemporary Art exhibitions in the world. It has the ability to propel the reputation of a featured artist from out of obscurity and into the international spotlight, or perhaps more significantly, into the international art market. Basically, the Venice Biennale is to art what the mercury prize is to music, or maybe it is best described as the Olympics of art, either way it gives various countries the opportunity to display, on the world's stage, their best and brightest artistic talent.

It was founded at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement as a means of promoting the decorative arts but soon developed into a international fair-styled platform (as was popular in many other European countries) wherein countries would contribute nationally-themed pavilions. Today, although the national pavillion fomat remains, the Venice Beinnale is most famous for exhibiting the best the world has to offer in Contemporary Art.

Some of the most celebrated artists have been selected to represent their country at the Biennale. For instance, here is a sampling of what the Canadian pavilions has had to offer:
